Midwest's 2004 US Nationals

a new day has come.

The 2004 US Arabian Nationals will be remembered as one of historical significance. Show ring records were both broken and newly created this year. "Team Midwest", in their typical good humored fashion, along with hundreds of their guests, celebrated deep into the night on Saturday October 16th 2004 in Louisville, Kentucky, all enjoying the culmination of one of the greatest Arabian Nationals in history.

The celebration actually began days earlier when David Boggs entered the show ring with the Half Arabian Gelding, GOOD AS IT GETS owned by Don and Kim Shackelford. Befitting his name, this incredible gelding garnered for David, David's first unanimous US National Championship in 5 years! "Goodie",as his owner's lovingly call him, has won a total of 13 National Championships in Half-Arabian Halter, making him the most winning Half-Arabian Halter horse in history!

Class after class it was as if David had never left the US show arena. Several exhibitors were even overheard commenting that it "Finally Felt like Nationals Again" to see David and the "Team Midwest" Clients showing their beautiful horses to the Championship Rose garlands.

To say that "Team Midwest" enjoyed a record breaking Nationals would be a severe understatement. After the final numbers were tallied, Midwest had garnered a total of NINE National Championships, TWO Reserve National Championships and TWENTY TWO National Top Ten wins! 6 of those National Championships brought to "Team Midwest" by the expert handling of David Boggs, Sandro Pinha, Gil Valdez and Rinaldo Longuine.

Throughout the show Midwest hospitality flowed like wine. A quick glance at the Midwest stall area revealed the carefully designed wooden beams high overhead twinkling with red white and blue lights. Delicate white linen softened the breezes around the stalls as music, plush sofas, pool tables and video games beckoned all to stop and visit for a while. Complimentary food and drink were an ever-present offering to the many guests as well.

As the last Saturday afternoon of the show drew near, tension filled the cold air. This would be the afternoon every one was waiting for, Magnum Psyche to enter the arena for the Senor Stallion class.

Magnum was carefully and very proudly led to the warm-up area by Midwest trainer, caretaker and longtime friend Gil Valdez. Cameras suddenly appeared in the gathering crowds surrounding Magnum as if Elvis himself had returned. Flashing bright blasts of admiring light shattered the darkness of the chilly Kentucky afternoon.

Truly, it was as if a Hollywood icon had suddenly appeared. Magnum, however, in true professional form, calmly took his place in the order of go in the entrance shoot. The excitement grew as his warm cooler was gently removed from his well-conditioned body. David, looking somewhat anxious, gently grasped Magnum's lead after giving him a good luck hug and looking to the sky one last time for his fathers nod. These longtime friends were about to embark on a promise that they had made each other.a date with destiny that began some 5 years ago.

As Magnum and David entered Freedom Hall arena, it was as if time was indeed standing still. You could read the determination in David's body, not thru David, but thru Magnum. It was amazing to watch. Magnum was not nervous for himself, but for David! You could see that Magnum felt every emotion that David felt. It was as if they were truly one! Magnum's lips tensed in nervous apprehension for the final standup in front of the judges. David calmly placed his whip on the ground; there was no need for it. Magnum and he had done this hundreds of times before. Then, almost as suddenly as it appeared, the tenseness left Magnum's lips as David took a breath and calm filled his body. David raised his arms, asking for Magnum to show, and Magnum stood tall, proud, in a perfect halter pose.

A quick look over the rail to Magnum's owners, Fernando and Joaquin De Santibanes, confirmed the mirror of emotion shared by Magnum and David on their faces. Joy, admiration and the knowing that they were witness to a once in a lifetime emotional performance was evident.

Magnum's son Jaayd was presented in this same class with Sandro Pinha and it was as if one was watching a re-enactment of Magnum himself being shown just years before. Jaayd, exhibiting the same light of greatness, was shown for owners Lucky and Raegen Lurkin. The Midwest team rose to there feet as Jaayd was announced as United States Reserve National Champion stallion! At this moment it became a prayer that if Magnum would be named National Champion in this same class, this would become a unprecedented record first in Arabian Horse History for a father and son victory! Watching his son accept his garland Magnum surveyed the arena with calm dignity.

As the announcer's voice broke the tension that could only be described as absolutely choking, Magnum Psyche was named the Unanimous National Champion Senior Stallion!

For a split instant, David's knees buckled, and if not for his arms resting on Magnum's strong back it seemed as if they would have given way, as such was the release of emotion! Gathering their strength together, Magnum and David ran to accept their roses!

Friends and family of "Team Midwest" joyfully ran into the ring to join in the celebration of taking photos from this incredible win. Then, to the crowd's delight, a new member of "Team Midwest" ran into the ring to congratulate Magnum! This little friend was a pet Raccoon who wore a Red Sweater with an "I Love Magnum" button pinned on it! Owned by friends, Victor & Lori Ricigliano, The crowd clapped and couldn't believe their eyes when little "Remo the Raccoon" was held up to Magnum and he gently reached out his hand and stroked and petted Magnum's Neck! It was almost as if to say. "Dear friend, you did well, you did well." And so the celebration began!

Later that evening the celebrations continued with Magnum's youngest son in his class *Magnum Chall HVP being named the National Champion Junior stallion. *Magnum Chall, also owned by Raegan and Lucky Lurkin resembled in every detail the strength and power that his sire had displayed only hours before!

On that final night, it seemed as if the entire show was packed around the Midwest Station II stalls. The star-studded lineup of show horses had garnered a very impressive nine National Championships during the previous week of competition. The beautiful Rose Blankets were hung from the archways of the stalls and the National Championship trophies were proudly displayed openly on a rail for all to touch and enjoy. Equally impressive, and well evident, was the excellent care given to each Midwest horse and to every detail involved in creating a "Fairy tale" feel to the Midwest stalls. This sort of careful attention to detail is one of a group effort including the Boggs family, the caretakers, grooms, semi truck drivers, trainers and friends of Midwest.

On a raised stage specially built for the Saturday night music, live bands played deep into the night. Dancing, singing and good friends gathered for what was to become one of the greatest Nationals in Arabian horse history.

Indeed it was a time for celebration! David Boggs was back in the show arena, the incomparable Magnum Psyche showed to a Unanimous National Championship and friends gathered by the hundreds to enjoy the horse show! This journey, this group effort, is known as being a part of the family called "Team Midwest".

As the show's wins were tabulated it soon became apparent that Magnum Psyche was setting Arabian show records. Magnum became the Leading Sire of Halter Champions at the 2004 US Nationals as well as his offspring being awarded FOUR National Championships, FOUR Reserve National Championships, and TWENTY EIGHT National Top Ten wins including Greg and Veronica Cowdrey's Maximuss with Sandro Pinha at the leading capturing the Futurity colt championship. And Sandro again with Rohara's yearling son of Magnum, American Idol earning the National Champion Yearling half Arabian colts. And another return of the multi National winner Maggdalina for Walter Misheks swept the Junior Mare National Championship.

If ever a dream had been dreamt, it was never more apparent that....a new day had come.

Leader of the Times - Magnum Psyche

Michael Phelps gliding effortlessly through the water. Carly Patterson vaulting gracefully through the air. Justin Gatlin flying to the finish line. The 2004 Summer Olympics produced an array of talented athletes that will be forever immortalized on Wheaties boxes, in Olympic flashbacks and on the covers of Sports Illustrated. They were, each and every one of them, inspiring and unforgettable - not just for their medal performances, but also for the hard work and determination that produced those performances.

If ever there were an Arabian Olympics, one horse would stand proudly on the middle platform decorated with the gold and an olive branch wreath. One horse's accomplishments have made him reining king of the Olympic throne - representing not only the finest in the United States, but perhaps in the world.

While judging any Olympic event, including our imaginary Arabian Olympics, is a completely subjective matter, clearly there is a forerunner - a breeding stallion that is, quite simply, the best of the best. His name is Magnum Psyche (Padrons Psyche x A Fancy Miracle).

Let's start with the Olympic 'trials.' Born on May 2, 1995, the flawless chestnut stallion made his show ring debut in 1996, when he captured the Buckeye Junior Colt Championship and Region XII Breeders Sweepstakes Yearling Colt Championship, the later with the most points ever awarded by the judges using the European Judging System.

In 1998, his mark would be made on the Arabian show ring forever when he claimed the title of National Champion Stallion in both the United States and Canada. In 1999, Magnum went global with the Argentine National Champion Stallion title.

While the international show ring accolades would be enough for this amazing stallion to qualify for the Arabian Olympics, it is his unmatchable record as a sire that would guarantee him a spot on the winner's podium. Magnum's more than 350 champion offspring have given him the ammunition to shatter all previous siring records. His accomplishments include:

  • Leading Halter Sire at Scottsdale 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004
  • Leading Sire at the United States Championships in 2001, 2002 and 2003
  • Leading Sire at the Canadian National Championships in 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004
  • Leading Sire of Breeders Sweepstakes Champions 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 (including yearling champions in all three categories)
  • Leading Juvenile Sire 2001, 2002 and 2003 (setting an all-time industry record)
  • Leading Sire of champions at the Minnesota Breeders Fall Festival in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003
  • Leading Sire of Argentine National Show Champions in 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004
  • Leading Sire at the 2002 Brazilian Breeders Cup Championships " Leading import sire of Arabians into the United States
  • Leading export sire of Arabians to other countries

While Magnum's natural perfection, his presence in the show ring and incomparable siring abilities are enough to raise him to world-class status, the climb hasn't been without a support team.

Owned by a gentle man, Mr. Fernando de Santibanes, and his family of Buenos Aires, Argentina, the stallion stands at Midwest Stallion Station, Elk River, Minn. Long before the world knew of Magnum, his future as a legendary horse was carved in stone when de Santibanes chose David Boggs as the stallion's partner, coach and friend.

Says David, "From the moment I saw him, I knew he might possibly be the most important horse in my entire life of working in the Arabian industry. He isn't just legacy or legend material; he is the best of the best. He is world-class - unforgettable, awe-inspiring and is setting records that may never be broken. And he has the spirit of his grandsire, *Padron."

Not words to be taken lightly when they come from the likes of David, who owns and operates, along with his wife, Terry Anne, one of the most successful and well-known Arabian breeding, marketing, training and sales organizations in the world - Midwest Stallion Station and Training Centre. Having worked with countless national champions and top-notch breeding stallions, David knows Olympic legend material when he sees it.

But, Boggs is quick to point out, Magnum's legend and timelessness isn't just about medals, rose garlands and numbers of progeny. It is about his uncanny ability to reproduce his likeness, time and time again. Some of the Magnum-sired superstars include: *Magnum Chall (Magnum Psyche x Taamara HVP, by Don El Chall), 2003 Scottsdale Junior Champion Colt; Absolut Magnum (Magnum Psyche x Lady Auria, by *Padron), Ames Charisma (Magnum Psyche x Ames Mirage, by Brass), 2003 Unanimous U.S. National Champion Yearling Sweepstakes Colt; Iimagine (Magnum Psyche x RD Kashandra by WA Kash), 2004 Region VII Champion Stallion and Estancia LL (Magnum Psyche x DF Khashmir, by Khemosabi), 2004 Scottsdale Grand Champion Mare.

Magnum's popularity transcends the United States' borders, with pillars of Arabian horse breeding worldwide recognizing his flawless conformation. Breeding programs all across North America, Argentina, Brazil, England, Germany, Spain, Poland, South Africa, Australia and the United Arab Emirates have all called upon Magnum through the satellite breeding stations managed by David Boggs. Many national champion mares have been, or will be bred to the legend, including Battaglia Farms' multi-titled Monrovia X and Cedar Ridge's Toi Jabaska.

"I believe in my heart that Magnum is the closest stallion I've ever known to be the perfect standard of the Arabian horse. Many people - breeders, trainers and judges, feel the same," says David. "And every breeder dreams and is anxious to replicate that in a foal, it is something that will carry on the Magnum tradition and outlive him."

As great as Magnum's accomplishments have been, the stallion has only just begun his journey in life, according to David. The tremendous support from his owner has allowed Magnum to become "all that is possible." In 2003, he competed for the first time in a 25-mile endurance ride, winning the stallion competition, thus preparing the champion for his re-entry into Freedom Hall as a senior stallion in Louisville, Ky. Could it be his time to stand on the Olympic podium once again, joining legendary horses and athletes alike from around the world? David, Magnum and the de Santibanes Family could not be more excited and ready for the challenge. In the meantime, his progeny continue to claim title after title, elevating their father to the same heights as those inspiring Olympic athletes like Phelps, Patterson and Gatlin. He is, along with our medal-winning athletes, alone in the spotlight, representing the best in the world.

The Romance that IS Magnum Psyche

At the heart of humankind's romance with the horse is the image of a glorious Arabian stallion, a creature of indescribable beauty that represents our most deeply cherished freedoms. Magnum Psyche epitomizes this vision. An undeniable gift from God, a paradox in the most elemental sense, Magnum mirrors the love and the liberty, the strength and the gentleness toward which we travel on this road of life.

Every day, a new chapter in the history of the Arabian horse is written. Since time immemorial, this noble creature has indelibly marked the hearts of the humans fortunate enough to know it. Since its origins in the cradle of civilization, the Arabian has enriched the lives of the people to whom it has been entrusted. And, throughout the ages, the potent blood of the Arabian has given birth to, or improved, every light horse breed that has served and been loved by horsemen the world over.

In twentieth century America we saw tremendous growth, change and improvement in the Arabian. Our love for and admiration of this unique horse grew exponentially with our understanding of the breed's intrinsic value. Throughout this continuing journey we have been blessed by the contributions of a few magnificent stallions, horses like *BASK++, *Padron, and Bey Shah that virtually changed the face and the direction of the breed. But never before have we seen transition occur with the speed and in the proportion we're witnessing today as Magnum Psyche takes his place in the annals of breed history.

"Magnum Psyche is the most beautiful Arabian stallion I've seen since Aramus," says Bob Battaglia. "And, as if his beauty weren't enough, Magnum has proven himself an extraordinary sire. Early on, before his sons and daughters were old enough to ride, Magnum showed uswith awesome consistencythat he could sire halter champions. Now we're seeing that he can also give us performance champions, horses that have the temperament and mental ability to be trained, horses that are both beautiful and tractable. I look forward to seeing more and more sons and daughters of this amazing stallion in the show ring, in both halter and performance."

Fine accolades from a horseman of Bob Battaglia's distinction. __times Horseman of the Year, Bob has earned 1525 career National titles, is a respected breeder and an Arabian horse industry leader of long standing.

So what makes Magnum Psyche worthy of all this high praise?
"First of all," says leading breeder in Brazil, Polé Levy, "it's a rare and wonderful thing to run across a horse of Magnum's stunning beauty and conformational perfection. But when such a horse turns out to be a great sire, invariably stamping his offspring with his own finest qualities ~ well ~ that's just not too far short of a miracle.

Magnum and the Show Ring

Magnum Psyche made his auspicious entrance into the world on May 2, 1995.
In 1996, he ran off with the coveted titles of Buckeye Junior Champion Colt and Region __ Champion Breeders Sweepstakes Yearling Colt with the highest points ever awarded by the judges using the European Judging System.. In 1998, at the tender age of just three years, Magnum became the youngest horse ever to earn the coveted title of National Champion Stallion when he danced off with this honor in both the United States and Canada. The following year, while on tour in South America, he added another yet another international title to his matchless record when he was named Argentine National Champion Stallion.

Magnum's first foals were born in 1999. In 2000, those youngsters began taking the show ring by storm, as had their sire before them. Thus far, the Arabian horse show arena of the twenty-first century belongs to Magnum Psyche. With over 300 champion offspring throughout the worldto dateMagnum has obliterated previous siring records by earning the following unparalleled honors:

  • Leading Halter Sire at Scottsdale 2001 & 2002, 2003, and 2004
  • Leading Sire at the United States and Canadian National Championships in 2001, 2002, and 2003
  • Leading Sire at The Canadian National Championships 2001, 2002, & 2003
  • Leading Sire of Breeders Sweepstakes Champions 2001 & 2002
(Including Yearling Champions in all 3 categories)
  • Leading Juvenile Sire 2001, 2002, and 2003
(Setting an All Time Industry Record)
  • Leading Sire of Champions 2000, 2001, 2002 & 2003
at the MAHB Fall Festival, (The Richest Futurity in the Nation)
  • Leading Sire of Argentine National Show Champions 2001, 2002, 2003, & 2004.
  • Leading Sire at the 2002 Brazilian Breeders Cup Championship Show

Magnum and the Market

Today, well into the fifth year of the twenty-first century, Magnum Psyche and the economy generated by the sale of his offspring represent the nucleus of the Arabian horse industry's financial well-being. This stallion's impact on the breed and its commerce is a modern day phenomenon.

  • Magnum Psyche is the undisputed leading sire in both the Arabian horse show arena and the Arabian horse marketplace ~ particularly as that market relates to yearlings.
  • Magnum is the leading sire of Arabian horses exported from America.
  • Magnum is the leading sire of Arabian horses imported to America.
  • Magnum's breedings topped each and every one of the charts at the Nation's richest futurities . . . Minnesota (MAHA), Iowa Gold Star, and Arizona Arabian Horse Breeders.

On behalf of his owners, Fernando and Joaquin de Santibanes of Haras Mayed, of Argentina, we invite you to join us at Midwest summer headquarters in Minnesota and at our facility in Scottsdale, Arizona next winter. Together we'll enjoy Magnum and his kids, and share our love of the greatest of God's creatures . . . the beautiful Arabian horse.

"My friend *Padron sent Magnum to me. Somehow I'm certain of that . . .

"I feel the same butterfly sensation every time I look at this horse. I still find it hard to believe that he could be this beautiful, this perfect, almost ethereal. And the partnership he and I have grown into together goes beyond anything I've known before.

"While we are all very grateful for his successes today, I know Magnum's journey has only just begun. There's so much more he wants to accomplish . . . so many more blessings to share.

" To Fernando de Santibanes . . . Thank you for all the goodness you bring to himand to usand for allowing Magnum to become All that is possible!" David Boggs

Magnum and Fernando de Santebanes are connected to one another on a level that transcends simple understanding. Between them, there is an intangible loyalty, that defies explanation.

Magnum recognizes Fernando's voice, even amidst the common hubbub and excitement that inevitably surrounds their visits. And when Fernando brings him carrots, Magnum clings to the man like a little boy, eager for love and approval. Theirs is, indeed, a union of spirit and a thing of beauty.

Midwest's Fall Breeders Festival Results:

2003 Minnesota Breeders Fall Festival & Midwest Training & Breeding Stations set new Records!

Midwest Training & Breeding Stations, together with its outstanding young Halter and Western Horses and their talented amateur handlers and riders, enjoyed a fun and successful 2003 Minnesota Fall Festival Show!

The weather turned chilly but that didn't stop the competition from "heating" up inside the show arena! The quality of the horses here left little wonder, why; this show has been touted for years as a "Mini-Nationals"! Midwest's amateurs rose to the challenge and brought home with them the ribbons and of course the fantastic prize money!

At the end of the show, after all of the awards had been tallied, Magnum Psyche was named, for the 4th year in a row, the "Leading Sire of the Minnesota Breeders Fall Festival", sending his personal Thanks to his many winning offspring.

are legendary. This year proved no exception. An early morning breakfast gathering was held "back at the ranch" on Friday morning. Satisfying the guests' appetites, "Magnum Mimosas", Coffee, Rolls and Doughnuts were offered. Then, to help warm them up during the chilly early morning air, a HOT "All Star" lineup of this year's National contenders and future Scottsdale entry's were presented. Rounding out the morning's festivities were the Midwest's Mega Star Stallion lineup: Magnum Psyche, Legacy of Fame, *Magnum Chall, Nations and the newest "Star" of Midwest, National Champion, National Show Horse Stallion, STING RAY !

One of the most anticipated events at the Minnesota Fall Festival is the mighty Medallion Stallion Service Auction. This auction generates the prize money for the resulting MAHB "Auction" yearling classes and for the futurity itself. When the auction is successful, EVERYONE benefits!

Midwest and the Boggs family are proud of its long time association with the Minnesota Breeders program. David's parents, Don & "Shorty" Boggs, were one of the original founding members of the MAHB, so it's from this family's history that Midwest continues its support. Midwest's finest Champion Stallions are enrolled in the Medallion Stallion Service Auction: Magnum Psyche, Legacy of Fame, *Magnum Chall, Nations, *Van Ali Dancer, *JJ Senor Magnum, Magnum Tuthousand and Emage Of.

Starting Saturday evening's Auction off with a "Bang", first lot in, National Champion Stallion, Legacy of Fame, saw the bidders supporting the Midwest Stallions with the winning bidder securing Legacy's breeding at $12,000! And his son was crown the Champion yearling Medallion colt. What a great way it was to start the auction. Legacy's breeding became the second highest sold at the auction. Throughout the auction, breedings were sold via video of stallions on big screen to an energetic crowd.

And finally,.. Lot, # 63, was announced and very aggressive bidding began, Magnum Psyche once again made history! For the 3rd Year in a row, Magnum Psyche's breeding topped the Minnesota charts! This time selling for an All Time Record High of $23,500!

Magnum Psyche's breeding was not only the highest selling breeding in the 2003 Auction, but it was also the highest selling breeding ever sold in the Minnesota Breeders Fall Festival's history!

After the evening's auctions were totaled, it was announced to the breeders that the 2003 Medallion Stallion Service Auction had reached an unprecedented over quarter of a million dollars!

The Stallion owners at Midwest are proud supporters of the World's Richest Futurity, the Minnesota Breeders Fall Festival. Any Arabian foal, resulting from a mare that was bred to any one of Midwest's Medallion Stallions, and is nominated, is eligible to compete in the Medallion Stallion Futurity. Make sure you visit the MAHB's website: www.medallionstallion.com for complete details. And the Boggs family invites you to visit Midwest and enjoy their horses and excitement of this great breed ..anytime!
